چکیده

Geologic records of landslide activity o er rare glimpses into landscapes evolving under the influence of tectonics and climate. Because the deposits of individual landslides are unlikely to be preserved, landslide activity in the geologic past is often reconstructed by extrapolating from historic landslide inventories. Landslide deposits have been interpreted as palaeoclimate proxies relating to changes in precipitation, although earthquakes can also trigger landslides. Here we measure cosmogenic 10Be concentrations in individual cobbles from the modern Quebrada Veladera river channel and an adjacent terrace in Peru and calculate erosion rates. We find, in conjunction with a 10Be production model, that the 10Be concentrations of each cobble population record erosion integrated over thousands of years and are consistent with a landslide origin for the cobbles. The distribution of 10Be concentrations in terrace cobbles produced during the relatively wet climate before about 16,000 years ago is indistinguishable from the distribution in river channel cobbles produced during the drier climate of the past few thousand years. This suggests that the amount of erosion from landslides has not changed in response to climatic changes. Instead, our integrated, millennial-scale record of landslides implies that earthquakes may be the primary landslide trigger in the arid foothills of Peru.

Recent 2017-2018 Seismicity and News Seismic Hazard Zoning of Iran

On November 12, 2017, at 18:18 UTC, a major earthquake with moment magnitude Mw7.3 struck the Kermanshah province of Iran, causing extended damage and casualties. Thus, we explore seismicity preceding this earthquake, with the aim to understand whether the information from past events could provide some insights about the occurrence of this and other future large earthquakes. Taking into accou...

Distribution Pattern of Landslides Triggered by the 2014 Ludian Earthquake of China: Implications for Regional Threshold Topography and the Seismogenic Fault Identification

The 3 August 2014 Ludian earthquake with a moment magnitude scale (Mw) of 6.1 induced widespread landslides in the Ludian County and its vicinity. This paper presents a preliminary analysis of the distribution patterns and characteristics of these co-seismic landslides. In total, 1826 landslides with a total area of 19.12 km2 triggered by the 3 August 2014 Ludian earthquake were visually interp...

Application of landsat imageries for mapping post-earthquake landslide, case study: 2012 Ahar-Varzegan earthquake, NW Iran

The 2012 Ahar-Varzegan earthquake and its aftershocks have not only caused huge damage with a severe loss of life and property but also induced many geo-hazards with the major type of collapse, creep, slip, debris flow, and fallings that are generally considered as landslide in this study which can cause continuous threats to the affected region. in this study, a semi-automated geo-hazard detec...

Hybrid-SAR Technique: Joint Analysis Using Phase-Based and Amplitude-Based Methods for the Xishancun Giant Landslide Monitoring

Early detection and early warning are of great importance in giant landslide monitoring because of the unexpectedness and concealed nature of large-scale landslides. In China, the western mountainous areas are prone to landslides and feature many giant complex landslides, especially following the Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008. This work concentrates on a new technique, known as the “hybrid-SAR te...
